Preface

A favorite for a lot of Christmas carolers during Christmas morning, Deck the Halls has been a mainstay in many movies about Christmas because it gives us a vivid image of bright and colorful decorations and decorating our homes or any establishment to make us feel the season is upon us.

Christmas Carol Origin – Deck The Halls

Used as a background for Christmas cartoons such as Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, this song has a bubbly beat and really makes you feel “jolly” just listening to it. But did you know that the Welsh translation of the song from which the tune originated from is a little less “jolly” than what you would have expected otherwise. The Welsh translation, “Nos Galan or Cold is the Man”, speaks of cold bills that come after the holidays and spending more than what you earn, which is kind of the sad part of the holidays although quite frankly, it is sometimes true for most people.

Deck The Halls History

The tune of the song was originally used as background music for carols, which were originally dances and not songs. But due to the Church’s opposition to folk dances, lyrics were added to make it a song speaking about Christmas festivities. The first version in English was made in 1881, which could be found in The Franklin Square Song Collection.

Deck The Halls Lyrics

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
'Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
While I tell of Yuletide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
