Origin of Christmas Carols

Carol, or “Noel” and “Carole” for some, is a word derived from Anglo-Norman and French origin. The word means circular dancing together with singing. Christmas carols were generally defined as songs used to express religious merriment and are often associated with holiday season.

Christmas Carols History

It is believed that it was 13^th century that the custom of Christmas carols singing was initiated. According to research, Christmas carols were sung in harvest festivals and holiday season particularly Christmas. The years of 1350 to 1550 was considered as the golden era of Christmas carol.

Christmas carol became popular as a form of religious hymns and songs having the theme which described Jesus, Saints and Mother Mary and used the combination of two languages – English and Latin.

In 15^th Century, Christmas carol became the art music. It was considered as the important part of traditional English music.

In 16^th century, the Christmas carol’s popularity faded and almost disappears. It was not until 18^th century that the carol was revived. Most of popular Christmas songs we know of today were composed during those years.

Facts and Trivia about Christmas Carols

Did you know?

• In early times, Carol was refereed as the circular dance accompanied by music. Years after, it was developed into musical piece with refrain and verses. Although not all traditional carols had Christmas lyrics, most of them were related to Christmas celebration, Advent, Jesus Christmas, Mary and saints.

• Boar’s Head Carol, printed in 1521, is a traditional English carol which describes the boar’s head as traditional dish on Christmas Eve.

• Saint Francis of Assisi introduced the Christmas Carols as part of religious church services.

• Silent Night is another old Christmas son written by Joseph Mohr in 1818. He composed the song after he learned about the broken Christmas organ. It was then he compose 'Stille Nacht' that could be sung with guitar and choir.

• On 3^rd of November year 2009, the world record of prime number of carolers who simultaneously sing Christmas carol was broke by the Christmas sing along event, led by Andrea Bocelli – having 14,000 people singing.

This is a funny song of a second grader wishing for Santa to give him his two front teeth back because as we all know children of this age usually lose their milk teeth and grow their permanent teeth after a few months. Because the two front teeth are the most exposed, they are usually the first to give way.

Origin and History of the Carol

This traditional American Christmas song written by Tommie Connor and recorded by Jimmy Boyd reached the number one spot of the charts during 1952 and continued to make the news because the Catholic Church condemned the idea of Santa Claus and the idea of feeding the children an image of adultery so to speak.

You could say that it is a comedic Christmas song for adults in America because they still practice the tradition of feeding their children with the idea that a magical being named Santa Claus is responsible for all the gifts they receive during Christmas day. The fathers even go an extra mile by dressing up like Santa in red tights to reinforce the idea. In the scenario, this child sees Santa kissing his mother underneath the mistletoe and this is very confusing to him because the child adores Santa but knows that only his father should be kissing his mother. The pun is thinking about how many times this exact scenario may have happened to some American families and how parents had to explain to their children the truth about Santa because they try as much as possible to keep this truth from them to keep Christmas feel a little more magical.

When I was still young, I could remember always wanting to catch Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Santy, Kris Kringle or better yet Santa Clause coming down the chimney to bring me my Christmas gifts and at times I go to the extent of trying to imagine his footsteps on our rooftop but later find out that it was just the cats playing around with each other on the roof.

Origin of Carol Must Be Santa

Mitch Miller originally recorded the song way back in 1961. The composer of this song is Hal Moore and Bill Fredericks. The song is well thought out as a call and response with the lead singer posing the question of who has a certain trait, and with a chorus responding that Santa is the one being pointed out in the question and that Santa Clause is also the answer.

Being able to see Santa is one of the greatest wish of every child that believes in this myth. Parents usually just let them enjoy their imagination that Santa really exists because it makes them happier feeling that this day is more magical than normal.

The trendy song was of Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson’s composition. The first recording of the song was made by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys back in the 1950’s. This was a great follow-up to the immense success of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer which Autry recorded the preceding year.

Many experts agree that the title of this famous Christmas carol should be read in English as The First “Nowell” and not Noel, which is its French translation, meaning Christmas. Nowell is derived from natalis, a Latin word which means birth.

History of the Carol “The First Noel”

The true source of this explicit carol is still uncertain but many studies agree that it dates back to at the seventeenth century but some say even asa far as the thirteenth century. William B. Sandy and Davies Gilbert revised and made additions to the lyrics during the 1820’s and this is the version we are familiar of today. The melody’s origin is still in speculation up to this day.

The song was published in Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern, which was a book written by Sandy during the 1820’s. Other very famous songs like I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Hark the Herald Angels Sing also debuted in this book.

The Christmas carol speaks of how a meager young boy was beckoned by one of the three kings to accompany them in the journey to Bethlehem to pay homage to the new born king. Because he had no gift to offer, this boy opted to play his drum as an offering, which pleased the Blessed Mother Mary a lot.

History of Little Drummer Boy

Previously referred to as The Carol of the Drum, The Little Drummer Boy is an all-time-cherished Christmas song known by many people across the world because of the subtle message it brings about thanksgiving. Although there is a small dispute whether Jack Halloran was the original composer of the song, Katherine Davis is widely accepted to have been this song’s creator. This was written during the 1940’s and was first made famous by the Trapp Family Singers during the 1950’s. A rendition by the Harry Simeone Chorale only made this song even more familiar to listeners’ ears.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Hark the Herald Angels Sing is a Christmas carol composed by Charles Wesley, a poet and a writer notable for the commencement of Methodist movement in Church of England. This song first appeared in the book of “Hymns and Sacred Poems” in 1739. Wesley’s version of this song is slow and solemn and with opening as “Glory to the King of Kings” or "Hark! How all the Welkin Rings”.

Over the years, there has been a different versions of the song in which the most popular is George Whitefield’s. Whitefield changed the opening of the song. It was Felix Mendelssohn who wrote a cantata as tribute to the invention of printing press in 1840. Then, William H. Cummings, a musician, adapted the melody of the cantata to fit the “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” lyrics.

The Twelve Days of Christmas is a popular Christmas song in which the increasingly number of gifts for each day of The 12 days of Christmas was enumerated. This Christmas carol was first published in 1780 in England. The very first well-known version of this song was recorded by James O. Halliwell, an English scholar, in 1842.

This Christmas song was originally written by Haven Gillespie and John Frederick Coots. The banjoist Harry Reser, together with his band, made the first recording of the song during the 1930’s. The very first airing of this famed Christmas carol was heard on Eddie Cantor’s radio station on November of that year and from that day on, it became a smashing hit selling over 400,000 copies.

There are numerous singers who have their own version of the song and that includes Alan Jackson, Alice Cooper, All-4-One, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Alvino Rey with the King Sisters, Andrea Bocelli, Andy Williams, Angelica Maria (Spanish version), B2K, Beegie Adair, Bianca Ryan and Bill Evans.
