Preface

The most widespread Christmas hymn that has been translated in almost every language of the known world, Oh Come, All Ye Faithful is a much loved piece for every church choir during Christmas time because of its intricate tune and melody. But most importantly, churches around the globe prefer such songs because of its ability to strengthen a believer’s faith and to be a bit presumptuous, even engage those skeptics who are almost ready to join the fold.

History of the Christmas Song Oh Come, All Ye Faithful

Adeste Fideles in Latin, the origin of the lyrics and the tune of this hymn is still a disputed argument up to this day because it dates back to the 15th- 17th century and some say even further back to the 13th century. One widely accepted notion is that John Francis Wade is the author of the 1st four verses and that the Abbé Étienne Jean François Borderies added the supplementary three verses. Although this is still unclear, one can be sure that Frederick Oakeley and William Thomas Brooke are the architects of the English version which is the most familiar to a lot of people.

Whoever the true author of this song maybe, one thing is for certain, he or she was inspired by God Himself, as are all Christian songs that come from the heart.

Oh Come, All Ye Faithful Lyrics

O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him,
Born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O Come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

God of God,
Light of Light,
Lo! he abhors not the Virgin's womb:
Very God,
Begotten, not created;

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;
Glory to God
In the highest;

See how the shepherds,
Summoned to his cradle,
Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
We too will thither
Bend our joyful footsteps;

Child, for us sinners
Poor and in the manger,
We would embrace thee, with love and awe;
Who would not live thee,
Loving us so dearly?

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given;
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing;
