Preface

Although this Christmas song is not as familiar as the other Christmas carol standards, one cannot help but appreciate its melody and most importantly, the stirring message this song offers after listening to it for the first time because it is a rude awakening to a modern-day Christian’s ears.

Origin and History of See Amid the Winters Snow

Sometimes referred to as “Hymn for Christmas Day”, See Amid the Winters Snow was a song written by Ed¬ward Cas¬wall and composed by John Goss during the 1850’s. The song could be found in Ea¬sy Hymn Tunes…Adapt¬ed for Ca¬tho¬lic Schools, a book publish by Caswall. It was later re-publish in the book, Masque of Ma¬ry in 1858 by the same author.

With the massive commercialization of the Christmas season, it isn’t a wonder that we have forgotten the true essence of why we are celebrating in the first place. In this Christmas hymn, Caswall tries to implant in our minds this realization that we should look pass Christmas as just a bright and jolly holiday for gift-buying, gift-giving and playing in the snow but instead we should view it as a solemn commemoration of the ultimate gift that was bestowed upon us by the Almighty God on the 25th of December, two thousand years ago.

See Amid the Winters Snow Lyrics

See amid the winter's snow,
Born for us on earth below,
See the tender Lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years.

Chorus
Hail, thou ever-blessed morn!
Hail, redemption's happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Lo, within a manger lies
He who built the starry skies;
He who throned in height sublime
Sits amid the cherubim.
Repeat Chorus

Say, ye holy shepherds, say
What your joyful news today;
Wherefore have ye left your sheep
On the lonely mountain steep?
Repeat Chorus

"As we watched at dead of night,
Lo, we saw a wondrous light;
Angels singing peace on earth
Told us of the Saviour's birth".
Repeat Chorus

Sacred infant, all divine,
What a tender love was thine,
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this.
Repeat Chorus

Teach, O teach us , Holy Child,
By Thy Face so meek and mild,
Teach us to resemble Thee,
In Thy Sweet humility!
Repeat Chorus
