Preface
One of the most popular Christmas carols of all time, Silent Night has been a chosen favorite for almost every caroler singing in the streets during this festive season due to the novelty of the song and its familiarity to most of the listeners’ ears. To most people, it is the solemnity of its melody and the pureness of its words they love the most about it. One can’t help but feel warm and fuzzy inside just listening to it being sung on a cold December night.
History Of Christmas Carol – Silent Night
Written as a poem in 1816 by a young priest named Joseph Mohr, Silent Night is actually an Austrian hymn titled "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht.” It was only two years later when Mohr showed the poem to his friend and requested him to compose a melody as the lyric accompaniment so that the carol could be used as church piece at Midnight Mass. "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!" was heard for the first instant in St. Nicholas Church that very evening of December 24, 1818.
Several years later, the song managed to spread like wildfire around the globe and in the process, several musical notes were changed, and the carol evolved into the melody we know today.
Silent Night and Christmas Traditions
Although it is quite interesting to know more about the origin of the famous Christmas carol, what gave this song its fame wasn’t its origin but instead, it was its subject: the Birth of Jesus Christ. The song depicts the setting of what would later be the most celebrated event known to mankind – Christmas. This song also gives us the pleasing image of the Blessed Virgin Mary singing a lullaby to the baby Jesus and how its powerful message of heavenly peace should always be in our hearts, which is believed to be the main purpose of the song’s creation

Silent Night Lyrics
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavely hosts sing alleluia;
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Christ the Saviour, is born!
Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
