Preface

One of the most popular Yuletide songs of all time, Joy to the world literally affords us with words that we may use for praise and worship for the blessing that is Christmas and we are given opportunity to reflect on how we should be grateful that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was born.

Origin and History of Carol Joy to The World

Inspired by the bible verse, Psalm 98, Isaac Watts originally wrote this very renowned Christmas song as a hymn in worship for what is yet to be Christ’s second coming here on earth and not in celebration of His awaited birth, which was previously the assumption of many. Because of its message of celebration for the arrival of our King, this song has been used in many Christmas plays and manger scenes across the world.

Lowell Mason arranged the music for the lyrics made by Isaac Watts in 1839 and it was believed to be an adaptation from a melody from Handel and some of the notes from the song are similar to that of other famous Christian hymns also. The tune for the famed Christmas song is generally termed as “Antioch”.

Joy to The World Lyrics

Joy to the world! The Lord is come:
Let earth receive her King.
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and heaven and nature sing.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.
