Deck The Halls

Origin and History | Deck the Halls Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

A favorite for a lot of Christmas carolers during Christmas morning, Deck the Halls has been a mainstay in many movies about Christmas because it gives us a vivid image of bright and colorful decorations and decorating our homes or any establishment to make us feel the season is upon us.

Christmas Carol Origin – Deck The Halls

Used as a background for Christmas cartoons such as Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, this song has a bubbly beat and really makes you feel “jolly” just listening to it. But did you know that the Welsh translation of the song from which the tune originated from is a little less “jolly” than what you would have expected otherwise. The Welsh translation, “Nos Galan or Cold is the Man”, speaks of cold bills that come after the holidays and spending more than what you earn, which is kind of the sad part of the holidays although quite frankly, it is sometimes true for most people.

Deck The Halls History

The tune of the song was originally used as background music for carols, which were originally dances and not songs. But due to the Church’s opposition to folk dances, lyrics were added to make it a song speaking about Christmas festivities. The first version in English was made in 1881, which could be found in The Franklin Square Song Collection.

Deck The Halls Lyrics

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
'Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
While I tell of Yuletide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Origin and History | Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

First heard in Meet Me in St. Louis by Judy Garland during the 1940’s, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas has touched the hearts of many Christmas-loving folks across the borders. With its sentimental theme and heartwarming melody, one can’t help but melt away to the tune of the music Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine’s created for the said movie.

History and Origin of Christmas Carol Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Like most popular American Christmas songs, this song as endured numerous versions and has been played in all sorts of tempo and styles ranging from the classics to even a rock version sung by the Twisted Sisters. With a fabulously tailored Christmas song such as this, you could definitely expect that many big names in the music industry would kill to include this song in their Christmas albums because people can relate to it thus it is easy to market. In fact, names such as Michael Buble, Lady Antebellum, Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor, Connie Francis, Frank Sinatra and even Kermit the Frog has taken a piece of this action.

When asked in an interview, Hugh Martin admits that the Twisted Sisters’ take on the prominent Christmas song was the weirdest version he ever heard and Frank Sinatra’s was his favorite.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Lyrics

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star
upon the highest bough.
And have yourself
A merry little Christmas now.

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree Lyrics

Rocking around the Christmas tree
At the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see
Every couple tries to stop.

Rocking around the Christmas tree,
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling.

you will get a sentimental
Feeling when you hear
Voices singing let's be jolly,
Deck the halls with boughs of holly.

Rocking around the Christmas tree,
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily
In the new old-fashioned way.

Winter Wonderland

Origin and History | Winter Wonderland Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

Winter Wonderland, an exquisite song to listen to most especially when you have been fortunate enough to experience winter first hand because you can better relate with the lyrics. It is a winter song that has a Christmas instant pop standard. Hearing this song makes you want to jump for joy and run outside your front lawn because when you say it is Christmas, it is time for snow, a soft granular material made up of crystalline water ice consisting of a massive amount of snowflakes that fall from the clouds.

History of Christmas Carol Winter Wonderland

This song was written by Felix Bernard way back in the 1940’s and the one who crafted the lyrics was Richard B. Smith. He was seemingly motivated to make this Christmas carol after witnessing the Honesdale's Central Park enclosed in snow.

Years passed by and it has been recorded by over 150 varied artists. But what matter most is the feeling that we find after listening to the song which is happiness because Christmas is the time for giving and forgiving.

Winter Wonderland Lyrics

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight,
We're happy tonight.
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song,
As we go along,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
Then pretend that he is Parson Brown

He'll say: Are you married?
We'll say: No man,
But you can do the job
When you're in town.

Later on, we'll conspire,
As we dream by the fire
To face unafraid,
The plans that we've made,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,
And pretend that he's a circus clown
We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman,
Until the other kiddies knock him down.

When it snows, ain't it thrilling,
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

Walking in a winter wonderland,
Walking in a winter wonderland.

The Friendly Beasts Lyrics

Jesus, our brother, kind and good,
Was humbly born in a stable rude;
And the friendly beasts around Him stood.
Jesus, our brother, kind and good.

"I," said the Donkey, shaggy and brown,
"I carried His mother up hill and down;
I carried His mother to Bethlehem town."
"I," said the Donkey, shaggy and brown.

"I," said the Cow, all white and red,
"I gave Him my manger for His bed;
I gave Him my hay to pillow His head."
"I," said the Cow, all white and red.

"I," said the Sheep, with the curly horn,
"I gave Him my wool for His blanket warm;
He wore my coat on Christmas morn."
"I," said the Sheep, with the curly horn.

"I," said the Dove, from the rafters high,
"I cooed Him to sleep that He should not cry;
We cooed Him to sleep, my mate and I."
"I," said the Dove, from the rafters high.

Thus every beast by some glad spell,
In the stable dark was glad to tell
Of the gift he gave Emmanuel,
The gift he gave Emmanuel.

Here We Come A-Wassailing

Origin and History | Here We Come A-Wassailing Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

Wassailing was a termed used to denote the act of caroling door-to-door and wishing good health to each listener, instead of begging for alms. Like many Christmas and New Year carols, there are a number of associated adaptations of the words. One version can be found on the manuscript specified in The New Oxford Book of Carols.

History of Here We Come A-Wassailing

Every so often labeled as Here We Come A-caroling, Here We Come A-wassailing is a time-honored English carol for Christmas and New Year written during the 1850’s. The aged English wassail carol is a peaceful gesture English people practiced to allow good tidings to spread across every single home in the community.

Some very popular artists that have performed their renditions of this song are Perry Como and the Ray Charles Singers, The King's Singers, the Ray Conniff singers, The Watersons, Pete Coe, John Kirkpatrick, Kate Rusby, the beloved cartoon Alvin and the Chipmunks and an instrumental version was also featured on the "A Canadian Brass Christmas" album.

Here We Come A-Wassailing Lyrics

Here we come a-wassailing
Among the leaves so green,
Here we come a-wand'ring
So fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

We are not daily beggers
That beg from door to door,
But we are neighbors' children
Whom you have seen before
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

Good master and good mistress,
As you sit beside the fire,
Pray think of us poor children
Who wander in the mire.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year

We have a little purse
Made of ratching leather skin;
We want some of your small change
To line it well within.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

Bring us out a table
And spread it with a cloth;
Bring us out a cheese,
And of your Christmas loaf.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

God bless the master of this house,
Likewise the mistress too;
And all the little children
That round the table go.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you
A Happy New Year,
And God send you a Happy New Year.

All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth

Origin and History | All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

If you could remember the Christmas special of the Chipmunks and Goofy, then this song would definitely ring a bell. This is a funny song of a second grader wishing for Santa to give him his two front teeth back because as we all know children of this age usually lose their milk teeth and grow their permanent teeth after a few months. Because the two front teeth are the most exposed, they are usually the first to give way.

Origin and History of the Carol

The song, which was originally composed by a second grade teacher on 1944, became famous due to famous cartoons such as Goofy and the Chipmunks but most American children already know the song from their parents and they enjoy it because of its upbeat melody and funny antics about this everyday occurrence.

Numerous versions and parodies have been made for this song but the original version never fails to place a smile on people’s faces, even though these smiles are two teeth less. Pardon the pun.

All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth Lyrics

Every body Pauses and stares at me
These two teeth are gone as you can see
I don't know just who to blame for this catastrophe!
But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be!

All I want for Christmas
is my two front teeth,
my two front teeth,
see my two front teeth!

Gee, if I could only
have my two front teeth,
then I could wish you
"Merry Christmas."

It seems so long since I could say,
"Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!"
Gosh oh gee, how happy I'd be,
if I could only whistle (thhhh, thhhh)

All I want for Christmas
is my two front teeth,
my two front teeth,
see my two front teeth.

Gee, if I could only
have my two front teeth,

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

Origin and History | Jolly Old Saint Nicholas Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

The melody is quite plain, with every phrase being led by four repeating notes. The lyrics speak of Santa’s list of gifts to bring like “a pair of skates for Johnny and a story book for Nelly”. A lot of children appeal to the song because of its cheerful nature.

History of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

Although its true author is still a mystery up to now, Jolly Old St. Nicholas is believed to have been the work of Wilf Carter, also known as Montana Slim, a Canadian country singer. On the other hand, one can find this song being mentioned in past works as Christmas Orphans by Susan Gregg during the 1910’s, which precedes Wilf’s publishing. The song has also been attributed to the author of Up on the House Top, Benjamin Hanby during the 1860s, yet this may also be in debate. The song is customarily sung to an up-tempo arrangement in Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel.

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas Lyrics

Jolly old Saint Nicholas,
Lean your ear this way!
Don't you tell a single soul
What I'm going to say;
Christmas Eve is coming soon;
Now, you dear old man,
Whisper what you'll bring to me;
Tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve,
When I'm fast asleep,
Down the chimney broad and black,
With your pack you'll creep;
All the stockings you will find
Hanging in a row;
Mine will be the shortest one,
You'll be sure to know.

Johnny wants a pair of skates;
Susy wants a dolly;
Nellie wants a story book;
She thinks dolls are folly;
As for me, my little brain
Isn't very bright;
Choose for me, old Santa Claus,
What you think is right.

When A Child Is Born

Origin and History | When a Child is Born Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

When a Child is Born is one of the those inspiring Christmas songs that can uplift your spirit when you are down because it depicts how the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ in Bethlehem gave new hope to a world which was lost and it also gives the message that even in the darkest of nights, there will always dawn “a brand new morn”.

Origin and History of the carol When a Child is Born

The melody for this Christmas carol originally came from Soleado (1972), a wordless song by Ciro Dammicco. The lyrics was later added by Fred Jay to make it the song we know of today. You may notice that the humming introduction of the song comprises almost half of the entire piece. Although the song doesn’t literally speak of the birth of our Lord and Saviour in verbatim, it gives allusions that offer you the image of such a setting in that the “tiny star” may represents the bright star that lit up the silent night sky of Bethlehem during Christ’s birth. The English version has been presented by dozens of artists for the past decade but the most successful version came from Johnny Mathis (1976).

It is really doesn’t matter who made the most successful version, what matters the most is how this song allows us to reflect on the birth of the Holy Child which I believe is the quintessence of every Christmas song.

When a Child is Born Lyrics

A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds of change whisper in the trees
And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

A rosy hue settles all around
You got the feel, you're on solid ground
For a spell or two no one seems forlorn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

Ad-lib: And all of this happens, because the world is waiting.
Waiting for one child; Black-white-yellow, no one knows...
but a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter,
hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbor,
and misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten forever.

It's all a dream and illusion now,
It must come true sometime soon somehow,
All across the land dawns a brand new morn,
This comes to pass when a child is born.

Let It Snow

Origin and History | Let it Snow Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

“Let it Snow” has been referred to as a Christmas song by many because of the seasonal lyrics, regardless of the fact that this is purely a love song that makes no mention of Christmas other than snow.

History of Christmas Song “Let it Snow”

Sometimes referred to by its complete title "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!", this is a song of Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne’s creation, made popular during the 1940’s. The composers were inspired to write this song after experiencing one of the hottest days in Hollywood on record, which was on July of 1945. Vaughn Monroe was fortunate to have made the very first recording for this well-liked song, which reached the top of the Billboard charts the subsequent year.

Like most Christmas carol standards, a myriad of music artists have made their own versions of this best-selling song. Such artists as Doris Day, Andy Williams, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Dean Martin, Carly Simon, Chicago, and just recently, The Puppini Sisters and Lady Antebellum have included this song in their Christmas special albums.

Let It Snow Lyrics

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of stopping,
And I've bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight,
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we're still good-bying,
But as long as you love me so,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

Origin and History | I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

A funny yet slightly controversial Christmas song, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus can be heard on the radio almost every December without fail. Although for some countries that are not that familiar with the concept of Santa Claus, songs like these bear little meaning because they make no sense to them altogether.

Origin and History of the Carol

This traditional American Christmas song written by Tommie Connor and recorded by Jimmy Boyd reached the number one spot of the charts during 1952 and continued to make the news because the Catholic Church condemned the idea of Santa Claus and the idea of feeding the children an image of adultery so to speak.

You could say that it is a comedic Christmas song for adults in America because they still practice the tradition of feeding their children with the idea that a magical being named Santa Claus is responsible for all the gifts they receive during Christmas day. The fathers even go an extra mile by dressing up like Santa in red tights to reinforce the idea. In the scenario, this child sees Santa kissing his mother underneath the mistletoe and this is very confusing to him because the child adores Santa but knows that only his father should be kissing his mother. The pun is thinking about how many times this exact scenario may have happened to some American families and how parents had to explain to their children the truth about Santa because they try as much as possible to keep this truth from them to keep Christmas feel a little more magical.

Underneath his beard so snowy white;
Oh, what a laugh it would have been

Must Be Santa

Origin and History | Must be Santa Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

When I was still young, I could remember always wanting to catch Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Santy, Kris Kringle or better yet Santa Clause coming down the chimney to bring me my Christmas gifts and at times I go to the extent of trying to imagine his footsteps on our rooftop but later find out that it was just the cats playing around with each other on the roof.

Origin of Carol Must Be Santa

Mitch Miller originally recorded the song way back in 1961. The composer of this song is Hal Moore and Bill Fredericks. The song is well thought out as a call and response with the lead singer posing the question of who has a certain trait, and with a chorus responding that Santa is the one being pointed out in the question and that Santa Clause is also the answer.

Being able to see Santa is one of the greatest wish of every child that believes in this myth. Parents usually just let them enjoy their imagination that Santa really exists because it makes them happier feeling that this day is more magical than normal.

The Holly and the Ivy

Origin and History | The Holly and the Ivy Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

A traditional English Christmas song, The Holly and the Ivy holds fused Christian and Pagan metaphors because the two plants embody symbols of Pagan fruitfulness but are also established Christmas decorations for churches utilize ever since the 15th and 16th centuries, repeatedly cited in reports by many churchwardens.

History of The Holly and the Ivy

Holly and ivy was featured in the song, Sans Day Carol. Cecil Sharp (1859–1924) was the very 1st to publish most of the lyrics, together with its melody. A trendy choral arrangement for this Christmas carol was written by Sir Henry Walford Davies. Time and again presented at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, this song is a favorite for many choirs across the world.

This familiar Christmas song is associated to an old carol titled The Contest of the Ivy and the Holly, which speaks of a dispute involving the traditional symbols of femininity and masculinity correspondingly.

The Holly and the Ivy Lyrics

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily flow'r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our dear Saviour:
Refrain

The holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good:
Refrain

The holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in the morn:
Refrain

The holly bears a bark,
As bitter as the gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
For to redeem us all:
Refrain

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
Refrain

Still, Still, Still

Origin and History | Still, Still, Still Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

Still, Still, Still is an engaging, tender and poetic lullaby that usually enchants parishioners and other listeners alike. The song sends us the message of jubilation for being given the greatest of gifts yet in such a humble form of a baby. This carol is expressed by some as being very popular, yet it is quite difficult to come across any thorough historical information about it other than its Austrian beginnings.

History of the Carol Still, Still, Still

Still, Still, Still is a familiar Austrian Christmas carol to some people. Weihnachtslied which means Christmas carol in German, this delightful Christmas song was composed by the Christmas Traditional with words from G. Götsch and its melody can be credited to the Salzburg Melody by Süss during the 1810’s.

Entitled Still, still, still, weil's Kindlein schlafen will in German, this Christmas carol can be found on A Fresh Aire Christmas CD album by Mannheim Steamroller. Norman Luboff had compiled the 4-part choral arrangement for this song in 1958.

Still, Still, Still Lyrics

Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.
For all is hushed,
The world is sleeping,
Holy Star its vigil keeping.
Still, still, still,
One can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep,
'Tis the eve of our Saviour's birth.
The night is peaceful all around you,
Close your eyes,
Let sleep surround you.
Sleep, sleep, sleep,
'Tis the eve of our Saviour's birth.

Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.
While guardian angels without number,
Watch you as you sweetly slumber.
Dream, dream, dream,
Of the joyous day to come.

I'll Be Home For Christmas

Origin and History | I'll be Home For Christmas Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

With the recent surge of Overseas Foreign Workers (OFW) flocking to 1st world countries these days and the hundreds of soldiers fighting in the Middle East; it wouldn’t be so hard to imagine that this song has sent countless tears down the faces of almost half of the families around the world, after hearing it again and again on the radio or television.

History of Christmas Carol - I'll be Home for Christmas

The song, which was first recorded by Bing Crosby, became famous on 1943 when it was included in the “White Christmas” album and in fact, it skyrocketed to the top of the charts for that entire year. Although the song was originally intended for the soldiers fighting during the World War II, its relevance and sentiment can still be felt by every soldier fighting outside their country, anyone who has lost a love one and like I mentioned earlier, all the Overseas Foreign Workers who are so far away from their families just trying to make ends meet and saving up for a better life for their children.

This is such a meaningful, yet sensitive song for those spouses or children left behind who can relate to every word of its lyrics and who would disagree. It’s never easy to wish that that your loved ones could be with you during Christmas “even if only in your dreams.”

I’ll Be Home For Christmas Lyrics

I'll be home for Christmas;
You can count on me.
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree.

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love-light gleams.
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams.

From Heaven Above to Earth I Come

Origin and History | From Heaven Above to Earth I Come Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

This Christmas hymn which Martin Luther wrote was traditionally sung in two parts; the first verses sung by a man preferably dressed in an angel costume and going down a staircase, while the remaining few verses would be sung by the assembly at the bottom of the staircase.

Origin of From Heaven Above to Earth I Come

Translated from the German Christmas carol “Von Himmel hoch da komm ich her”, From Heaven Above to Earth I Come was a Christmas song composed by Martin Luther, a renowned German priest. He had written it during the 1530’s for his child so that they could sing it at his home on Christmas Eve. He even dressed up as an angel to sing the opening verses.

This was a tradition which he practiced a lot every Christmas, even including his students who couldn’t go home to spend Christmas. Four years later, Valentin Schumann added the music and the Christmas carol was published in the book, The Lutheran Hymnal. The song was marked as Hymn 85. The English translation can be attributed to Catherine Winkworth, who translated it in 1855.

From Heaven Above to Earth I Come Lyrics

From heaven above to earth I come,
To bear good news to every home,
Glad tidings of great joy I bring,
Whereof I now will gladly sing.

To you this night is born a Child
Of Mary, chosen mother mild;
This little Child, of lowly birth,
Shall be the joy of all the earth.

Glory to God in highest heaven,
Who unto us His Son hath given!
While angels sing with pious mirth,
A glad New Year to all the earth.

Ding Dong! Merrily on High

Ding dong! merrily on high,
In heav'n the bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky
Is riv'n with angel singing.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!

E'en so here below, below,
Let steeple bells be swungen,
And "Io, io, io!"
By priest and people sungen.
Refrain

Pray you, dutifully prime
Your matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime
Your evetime song, ye singers.
Refrain

The Christmas Song

Origin and History | The Christmas Song Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

Who hasn’t heard of the famous lines “chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping on your nose” from The Christmas Song which was first made popular by the King Cole Trio during the 1940’s.

Origin and History of “The Christmas Song”

Initially subtitled Merry Christmas to You, this song has surpassed boundaries and is one of America’s most beloved Christmas songs of all time. Like the song Let It Snow (1945), Bob Wells and Mel Tormé, the composers, were also inspired to write The Christmas Song in an attempt to get their minds off the hot summer heat they were experiencing at the time. You might say positive thinking is to blame for the creation of this truly intricate song. But whatever it may be, thousands of people are grateful because it is songs like these that remind us how simple yet meaningful Christmas can be if only we celebrate it with our loved ones.

Aside from the three other renowned versions that Nat King Cole made for the song, many other renditions of the song from numerous artists have become famous like that of Trace Adkins, Christina Aguilera, Clay Aiken, Herb Alpert, Thomas Anders, India.Arie and Stevie Wonder, Aska, Babyface, Tony Bennett, Polly Bergen, Justin Bieber & Usher, Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, Garth Brooks, James Brown, Les Brown and his Orchestra, Michael Bublé, Kenny Burrell, The Canadian Brass and The Carpenters.

The Christmas Song Lyrics

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you!

Jingle Bell Rock

Origin and History | Jingle Bell Rock Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

During my high school days, I used to hear this amazing song, “JINGLE BELL ROCK”, being played on the radio. It’s a song with a typical, lively beat that makes you want to sing and dance. Even in school presentations such as Christmas musicales, this song is always used as background music. In fact, you probably noticed most teen movies about Christmas use it during the end of the movie. It’s just a fun, quirky, rockabilly song to listen to.

History of Christmas Carol – Jingle Bell Rock

Jingle Bell Rock is a Christmas song written by a public relations man from Massachusetts, Joe Beal, and an advertising business writer from Texas, Jim Boothe. Bobby Helms made the first release of the song back in 1957. Although there are a lot of versions of the song at present, Bobby Helms’ take on it is the one known worldwide because of his distinct style known as the “rockabilly”. Helms last recording of the song took place in Black Rose on 1983.

Jingle Bell Rock and Christmas Celebration

The song reflects what we should be like during Christmas. It is all about having fun, having a great time and freeing ourselves from all the stress and problems that are in our lives. It’s our time to enjoy every moment this season can offer and be thankful for all the blessings that the Lord has given.

Jingle Bell Rock Lyrics

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring
Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun.

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air.

What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell rock

Frosty the Snowman

Origin and History | Frosty the Snowman Lyrics | Youtube Video | Music Sheets

Preface

Many big music artists such as Nat King Cole, Fiona Apple, Ray Conniff, Bing Crosby, Jeff Marsh, Larry Groce, Cocteau Twins, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Ella Fitzgerald, The Beach Boys, Leon Redbone with Dr. John, Red Foley, Connie Talbot, The Partridge Family, and even The Jackson 5 have made their own versions of this Christmas song. Some renditions of the Christmas carol change the last line of the song to "on Christmas Day!"

Origin of the Carol “Frosty the Snowman”

The animated Christmas carol Frosty the Snowman is known worldwide because of countless movies and cartoons that were made about it years after its creation. The trendy song was of Walter Rollins and Steve Nelson’s composition. The first recording of the song was made by Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys back in the 1950’s. This was a great follow-up to the immense success of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer which Autry recorded the preceding year.

Because of the appeal of Frosty the Snowman to children, the song was adapted into a cartoon, which was an incredible hit, almost surpassing the Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer cartoon.

Frosty the Snowman Lyrics

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose,
And two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say,
He was made of snow but the children
know how he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that
Old silk hat they found.
For when they placed it on his head,
He began to dance around.

O, Frosty the snowman
Was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh
And play just the same as you and me.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.

Frosty the snowman knew
The sun was hot that day,
So he said, "Let's run and
we'll have some fun
now before I melt away."
Down to the village,
With a broomstick in his hand,
Running here and there all
Around the square saying,
Catch me if you can.
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop.
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler "Stop!"

For Frosty the snowman
Had to hurry on his way,
But he waved goodbye saying,
"Don't you cry,
I'll be back again some day."
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.
